Mos Def force-fed in solidarity with Guantanamo hunger strikers

If you aren’t sure how you feel about Guantanamo, this might change your mind.

The Guardian released a video Monday of Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def) volunteering to undergo a painful force-feeding procedure used on hunger strikers held in the US’s Guantanamo Bay detention center.

In the video, 39-year-old actor and rapper is strapped to a chair by orderlies, who then forcibly insert a feeding tube into his nose.

UK-based Human Rights group Reprieve is behind the video, which was released on the first day of the month of Ramadan, when observant Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset.

According to The Guardian, the procedure performed on Bey in the video is based on a leaked document describing the “Standard Operating Procedure” for force feeding detainees on hunger strike.

There are currently 120 detainees on hunger strike in Guantanamo, 44 of which are being force-fed. On Monday a US judge denied a detainee’s request to stop the force-feeding, saying she didn’t have jurisdiction, but cited President Obama’s authority to do so.

The version of the video on YouTube already has over a million views.
