It’s been a tradition of the Globie Awards celebration to recognize journalists who are dedicated to telling stories of those who are underrepresented in media as well as honor a Globalist of the Year, who is selected from nominations put forward by Seattle Globalist readers. The Globalist of the Year embodies the values of The Seattle Globalist: racial equity, social and economic justice, elevating the voices of communities of color and immigrants, integrity, diversity, and community impact.
The Seattle Globalist is honored to be presenting immigration rights activist Maru Mora-Villalpando with the award for 2018 Globalist of the Year at our Fifth Globie Awards Celebration. Mora-Villalpando was selected from an extraordinary pool of nominees put forward by Seattle Globalist readers. Thank you, everyone, for your nominations.
Mora-Villalpando has been advocating for immigrant rights for nearly two decades. She founded Latino Advocacy in 2010 to help organizations and grassroot groups led by people of color build a true base in the community led by immigrants themselves and ultimately racial justice.
She is also the spokesperson of Northwest Detention Center Resistance, a grassroots undocumented-led movement that works to end the detention of immigrants and stop all deportations. She has been at the forefront of many pro-immigrant demonstrations and protests against the Northwest Detention Center, the privately held facility where ICE detains people who are awaiting detention hearings.
Her fearless work as an advocate and activist for undocumented people and for immigrant rights is truly an inspiration.

We are also honored to be recognizing three journalists who have each shown great commitment in their work reporting on underrepresented communities.

Kamna Shastri – Community Journalist of the Year
A former intern and contributor with The Seattle Globalist, Agatha Pacheco is currently a breaking news reporter with The Seattle Times. As our 2018 Journalist of the Year, we are recognizing Pacheco for her dedication, drive, and tenacity in local journalism. Pacheco has also shown great leadership in advocating for young journalists and demonstrated great critical thinking and understanding for covering diverse communities.
Gavin Amos-Lopez is a graduate of The Seattle Globalist’s 2017 Youth Apprenticeship Program. As our 2018 Youth Journalist of the Year, we are recognizing Amos-Lopez for his hard work, creativity, and commitment during the program. He has demonstrated great critical thinking, empathy, and understanding for covering diverse communities and telling stories of those who are underrepresented in media.
Kamna Shastri is also a former intern and contributor with The Seattle Globalist. Currently the program manager at Tasveer, Shastri has spent the last several years showing great dedication to community journalism in print, online, and radio. As our 2018 Community Journalist of the Year, we are recognizing Shastri for her versatility and commitment to serving the community through her work.
Honoring our founders
We will also be offering a special recognition to Sarah Stuteville, Alex Stonehill, and Jessica Partnow, who co-founded The Seattle Globalist in 2012 upon seeing the potential of making deeper connections between local and global stories in an increasingly diverse Puget Sound region. Sarah, Alex, and Jessica worked together on the nonprofit that ultimately became The Seattle Globalist for 12 years (its first incarnation, as the Common Language Project, launched in 2005). Originally a startup housed at the University of Washington’s Department of Communication, The Seattle Globalist became financially independent from the University in 2016, with the founders handing off the reigns in 2017. Alex is currently a boardmember and Sarah and Jessica are still key supporters. We thank them for their vision, dedication, and passion for making the Globalist what it is today.
