Mitragyna speciose (aka kratom) is a tropical evergreen tree predominantly grown in the botanical regions of Southeast Asia. The plant is in the same family as coffee, and its leaves offer many medicinal benefits due to its unique alkaloid profile. People have, for centuries, used kratom leaves for a highly flexible and diverse range of purposes, including mood enhancement, pain relief, and cognitive stimulation. In addition to this large range of medicinal applications, the plant also has other positive secondary properties such as high-antioxidant and vitamin content, which has made it worthwhile for general health purposes as well.
The plant has recently received an abundance of media attention, so it’s important to clear up misinformation and walk through the facts about its safety, side effects and medicinal uses.
